This summer, KCI hosted an extern from the Maryland Chamber Foundation for the fourth year in a row.
During a month-long program, businesses throughout the state welcome high school staff and faculty to learn about a specific industry and its future career options for their students. After shadowing employees and gaining hands-on experience, externs have the ability to take the information they’ve learned back into the classroom to further prepare the next generation of workers.
Over the summer, KCI welcomed Melanie Green, a college and career advisor from Anne Arundel County Public Schools in Maryland, to connect with technical and administrative leaders from across the firm. Through detailed discussions about our service offerings and guided tours of local job sites, she saw day-to-day operations and innovative technologies used by our team firsthand in the community and beyond. After visiting an electrical substation, facility construction, and transportation project locations, Melanie learned about the various opportunities available in STEM-related fields.
In addition to meeting with our technical staff, Melanie spent her time speaking with KCI’s executive leadership to gain an understanding of the professional development and administrative career paths that are also available within the industry. Ending her externship with a presentation to internal management about her experience, she plans to share her newfound knowledge with students who are passionate about engineering, science, and technology.
KCI’s participation in the program continues the firm’s mission of inspiring the future leaders of our industry. Through this partnership, we can build a lasting connection with local teachers and support these students as they move forward with their education.
