The Nice/Middleton Bridge Replacement project was recently honored by the Maryland Quality Initiative (MdQI).
The project won a Green/Sustainability/Environmental Award during the annual MdQI conference held in Baltimore, Maryland. Lee Anne Janney, CCM, was present to accept the award on behalf of KCI.
KCI provided environmental compliance and construction management and inspection services for the $462 million replacement of the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial/Senator Thomas (Mac) Middleton Bridge (Nice/Middleton Bridge). The construction of a new four-lane overpass adjacent to the previous structure was designed to support 18,000 daily vehicles that regularly utilized the crossing.
Successfully completed three months ahead of schedule, the modernized construction includes enhanced safety features and structural reinforcements. This included addressing environmental concerns within the river, adding the option of lane sharing for cyclists to encourage multi-modal transportation options, and rehabilitating the previous bridge’s materials to create an artificial reef. This completed crossing is set to establish better structural reliability and provide traffic relief to a congested area.
