Town of Sykesville Wins APA MD Neighborhood Revitalization Award

November 1, 2024 | Awards

The Town of Sykesville Downtown Improvements project was recently honored with the Maryland Chapter of the American Planning Association’s (APA MD) 2024 Neighborhood Revitalization award.

This award recognizes economic and community development that advances equity through leveraged resources, partnerships, funding, incrementalism, and a record of success. The honor was presented at the organization’s awards ceremony during the 2024 APA MD and Maryland Planning Commissioners Association conference in Ellicott City, Maryland. Rick Hoehn, Wisa Kompayak, Charles Kenny, and Lauren Good were in attendance to accept the award on behalf of KCI, accompanied by Town Manager and Executive Assistant Joe Cosentini and Mayor of Sykesville Stacy Link.

To enhance its award-winning Main Street, the Town of Sykesville teamed up with KCI to strengthen and preserve its downtown’s unique charm and vibrancy. Our placemaking vision included the creation of new outdoor gathering spaces and transformational streetscapes to make the downtown core more walkable and livelier. With cutting-edge 3D models and rendering software, our team showcased stunning potential transformations. In close collaboration with the Town Manager and Mayor, the project team chose historically appropriate site furnishings, durable paving materials, and sustainable placemaking design solutions while KCI’s land planning, civil engineering, and survey services brought these ideas to life. These exciting initiatives promise sustainable growth, elevate the community’s quality of life, and establish captivating focal points for the town’s many events.
