KCI provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services for the renovation of a 2,500-square-foot catheterization laboratory and associated support spaces within an active healthcare facility.

The project included the design of a procedure room, control room, equipment room, recovery area, patient rooms, and locker rooms. The building was designed to meet current industry standards for healthcare ventilation, including the integration of a compliant central air handling unit to serve the new surgical space. As construction occurred in an occupied facility, the new system was engineered to be installed in parallel with the existing unit to maintain continuous operation during the renovation. This approach minimized disruption and allowed patient care to continue without interruption.

One of the primary challenges involved the limited ceiling height between the surgical suite and the interstitial floor above. KCI worked closely with the ceiling system manufacturer, medical equipment supplier, and structural team to coordinate the installation of all MEP systems within the confined space. Through a collaborative and detail-oriented design process, the team successfully integrated the new systems while preserving the building’s structural integrity and clinical functionality. KCI’s team remained involved throughout design and construction, ensuring that all building systems were fully coordinated and installed to meet the demands of a high-performance surgical environment.
