KCI provided multimodal transportation design services for the rehabilitation of Demonbreun Street, a prominent corridor in downtown Nashville.

The corridor had long posed significant safety concerns for cyclists and pedestrians due to high traffic volumes and complex intersections. The team worked closely with city officials, stakeholders, and the community to create a comprehensive plan that included reconfiguring traffic lanes, modifying intersections, installing brand new medians, and adjusting the design of a critical on-ramp. KCI’s reimagined design also introduced safety features like concrete curb-separated bikeway buffers and a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB), enhancing protection for all travelers while maintaining accessibility for local businesses.

To support sustainable infrastructure, KCI utilized durable materials and established a landscaped median to promote long-term resilience and contribute to visual appeal. Additionally, to minimize disruption to the downtown area, the team accomplished all key onsite activities during off-peak hours. Now complete, this project aligns with Nashville’s ongoing Vision Zero initiative, which seeks to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries derived from transportation accidents.
