To accommodate for an increased volume of traffic on the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial/Senator Thomas Middleton Bridge, the Maryland Transportation Authority sought to construct an entirely new bridge adjacent to the existing structure.
Once construction of the crossing began in 2020, KCI was contracted to provide construction management and inspection services, environmental compliance oversight and contractor coordination. The project, which involved driving 200-foot piles into the river bottom to support the new structure, constructing administrative facilities, CPM schedule reviews, budget oversight, and system commissioning was completed in just two years.
Featuring enhanced traffic capacity and improved safety features, the new $462 million Nice/Middleton bridge is now set to serve travelers for decades. The previous 82-year-old structure was demolished and portions were saved to construct an artificial reef to support marine life in the area.
