The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) recently recognized two KCI projects during the annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) Gala.
The DDOT Federal Aid Citywide Pavement Restoration STBG contract and the Mount Sinai Behavioral Health Center project were both presented with National Recognition Awards. This honor is given annually to initiatives that exemplify innovation while contributing to greater community development. Representing KCI, Kaleab Desta, PE, PMP, Mike Izzo, PE, Frank Boateng, CMIT, Tibebe Soressa, Juan Gomez, and Jeff Tan, PE, CCM, PMP, LEED AP, attended this year’s Gala on behalf of the firm.
DDOT Federal Aid Citywide Pavement Restoration STBG Contract
KCI supported the District Department of Transportation (DDOT)’s Federal Aid Citywide Pavement Restoration program by managing construction for more than 70 miles of roadways and 37 miles of sidewalks across all eight wards. Using data-driven planning, digital coordination tools, and two-week look-ahead schedules shared through PaveDC, the team streamlined communication, coordinated over 100 annual construction activities, and minimized community impacts. Despite strict security constraints and work near federal and historic sites, the program was completed on time and under budget while incorporating sustainable practices that improved safety, accessibility, and mobility citywide.
Mount Sinai Behavioral Health Center
KCI supported the conversion of Mount Sinai Health System’s Behavioral Health Center, transforming a former HIV/AIDS nursing home into a modern, community-focused behavioral healthcare facility. The project included a full renovation of a late 1800’s six-story building, featuring structural demolition, new MEP infrastructure, elevator upgrades, facade investigations, utility coordination, and civil engineering improvements. Working within the constraints of an occupied urban environment and a historic building, the team developed innovative retrofit solutions that modernized the facility while preserving critical structural elements. Through strategic design, detailed existing-conditions analysis, and meticulous construction-phase support, the project delivered a newly integrated center for mental health, addiction recovery, physical healthcare, and social services. Services provided by KCI included: civil engineering, structural engineering, façade consulting, surveying, and special inspections.
