The American Council of Engineering Companies/Metropolitan Washington (ACEC/MW) honored four KCI projects with Engineering Excellence Awards.
These awards recognize projects in Washington, DC, Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties, and Northern Virginia that exemplify ingenuity and a high level of achievement. The winning projects were formally awarded during ACEC/MW’s annual Engineering Excellence Awards Gala.
Federal Aid Citywide Pavement Restoration STBG Contract – Honor Award
KCI supported DDOT’s Federal-Aid Citywide Pavement Restoration program by managing construction for more than 70 miles of roadways and 37 miles of sidewalks across all eight wards. Using data-driven planning, digital coordination tools, and two-week look-ahead schedules shared through PaveDC, the team streamlined communication, coordinated over 100 annual construction activities, and minimized community impacts. Despite strict security constraints and work near federal and historic sites, the program was completed on time and under budget while incorporating sustainable practices that improved safety, accessibility, and mobility citywide.
Florida Avenue NE / New York Avenue NE Intersection – Mamie “Peanut” Johnson Plaza – Honor Award & People’s Choice Award
The Florida Ave NE Streetscape project improved safety and multimodal connectivity along Florida Avenue NE between 2nd Street and H Street NE in Northeast Washington, DC, supporting the District’s Vision Zero goals. The project addressed a high-injury corridor through roadway reconfiguration, including reduced travel lanes, improved pedestrian crossings, continuous protected bike lanes, widened sidewalks beneath rail bridges, and updated bus stop designs that better integrate transit, bicycle, and pedestrian movements. Informed by data analysis and community engagement, the project enhances safety, accessibility, and long-term corridor connectivity for all users.
Metropolitan Branch Trail: Fort Totten to Takoma Section – Merit Award
KCI provided construction management services for DDOT’s Metropolitan Branch Trail Fort Totten–Takoma project, overseeing improvements along the 1.75-mile multimodal corridor. The team managed upgrades to roadways, intersections, lighting, drainage, and a new trail segment while coordinating five overlapping construction phases and maintaining public access with minimal disruption. The completed trail now supports 2,000–3,000 daily users and serves as a safer, more connected, and more sustainable corridor for the community.
MD 650 from Norbeck Road to MD 200 (ICC) Safety and Resurface – Merit Award
KCI partnered with MDOT SHA District 3 to lead the rehabilitation of the nearly 3-mile MD 650 corridor in Montgomery County. After field investigations uncovered significant infrastructure deficiencies, the team developed a comprehensive design that included full roadway resurfacing, sidewalk and driveway reconstruction, upgraded pedestrian ramps, guardrail replacement, and drainage repairs. The completed work achieved a 90% ADA compliance rate on initial inspection, improving safety and accessibility while avoiding costly rework.
