KCI provided construction management services for the District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) Fort Totten to Takoma project.
This transformative 1.75-mile multimodal infrastructure initiative enhances safety, accessibility, and sustainability across Northeast Washington, D.C. KCI’s team oversaw the multi-phases construction, which upgraded roadway surfaces, intersections, constructing a new branch trail, lighting, and drainage systems to create a safer, more connected corridor for cyclists, pedestrians, and transit users. Working adjacent to two active Metrorail stations, residential neighborhoods, and commercial corridors, KCI successfully coordinated five overlapping construction phases while maintaining public access and minimizing disruptions. Sustainability and community engagement were central to the project’s success.
Energy-efficient LED lighting reduced energy use by up to 50% and upgraded drainage infrastructure mitigates flooding and improves water quality. KCI supported over 20 community and stakeholder meetings to ensure transparency and timely delivery. The completed trail now serves 2,000–3,000 daily users, advancing DDOT’s Vision Zero and climate action goals.
