KCI was contracted to provide construction management and inspection services for the new construction of several buildings at a state-of-the-art highway maintenance facility in Brandywine, Maryland.

The facility provides ease of access to the resources needed to maintain the roadways within the local transportation network by replacing a deficient storage yard and greatly expanding the responsiveness of services. As the project site location is a critical element in Prince George’s County Department of Public Works & Transportation’s Snow Operation plan, it was essential that snow plan resources be in place prior to the start of the winter weather season. This required demolishing the existing facility and providing solutions with remote and digital technologies on an accelerated schedule, requiring a partnering attitude to deliver the 10,000-ton capacity salt barn and associated site access.

When potential issues with the site’s unsuitable soils were recognized early on, KCI construction staff led the effort to create a soils management plan that established an agreed course of action for different site conditions as they were met. Throughout the project timeline, which occurred during the height of the pandemic, KCI prioritized open communication and partnering between all stakeholders to ensure a smooth project delivery, which included digitized reports and the use of unmanned aerial vehicles to conduct project site surveys and provide overall project progress updates.

The maintenance facility and adjacent salt barn were opened and ready for needed operations by the critical date thanks to the teamwork and coordination of everyone involved in the project.
