After an inspection determined the critical Drewville Road Bridge was in critical condition, Putnam County selected KCI to design a replacement structure.

The existing single-span, 73-foot by 25-foot bridge was past a state of repairability and required immediate action. KCI’s team sought to design a new crossing that could improve long-term reliability while addressing recurring flooding and meeting current NYSDOT and AASHTO design standards.

Our multidisciplinary engineering team performed data collection and analysis, bridge inspection, topographic and right-of-way surveying, geotechnical subsurface investigations and geotechnical engineering, traffic analyses, hydraulic analysis, preliminary and final roadway and bridge design, environmental permitting for this Federal Aid bridge replacement project. The initiative commenced with field investigations to evaluate the existing structure to determine best course of action for replacement, as well as documenting nearby utilities and the hydraulic characteristics of the river itself. Once gathered, KCI utilized this information to develop and prepare a Design Approval Document (Design Report) that included documentation and evaluation of existing conditions, traffic analysis, geotechnical recommendations, hydraulic recommendations, bridge alternative comparisons and a cost comparison for the most feasible replacement bridge alternatives, helping the County select the most effective and economical solution. After determining the best option to meet project needs, our team performed the roadway, hydraulic and bridge engineering services to provide a new replacement bridge design, as well as all permitting and construction support services.

The new integral abutment bridge now features a longer, wider superstructure constructed with precast concrete adjacent box girders and a composite concrete deck slab. Additionally, the enhanced infrastructure was elevated above its predecessor, increasing the hydraulic opening beneath the overpass and supporting an improved flow pattern, providing a safer, more resilient crossing for years to come. Our team also provided new roadway improvements, which included two nearby intersections, and drainage design for the site.
