To address the growing demand for inclusive early childhood education services, Easterseals planned to transform two facilities in Prince George’s County, Maryland, into child development centers that met Head Start program standards.
Initially hired for peer review and construction oversight, KCI’s role expanded when it was discovered that the facilities did not meet the required standards as claimed by the developer. This necessitated a complete redesign, new construction permits, additional contractors, and expedited procurement of playground equipment, owner-furnished equipment, and classroom furnishings. The original six-month timeline had to be extended to accommodate these significant changes. Additionally, there was a critical need to complete playground construction before winter, adding another layer of urgency.
Despite these challenges, KCI successfully navigated the complexities of redesigning the facilities, securing necessary permits, and coordinating with stakeholders to ensure the project’s progression. Our team also played a key role in developing enhanced safety measures, including improved lines of sight for caregivers, security cameras, and door locking systems. As the project came to a close, KCI collaborated with vendors to select and install state-of-the-art playground equipment, ensuring it fit seamlessly into the designated areas at both locations.
