KCI provided multidisciplinary engineering expertise to revitalize the Fountain of the Fairs, a historic centerpiece of Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
Originally constructed for the 1964 World’s Fair and located in the heart of the park, the Fountain of the Fairs is a nationally significant landmark that has long served as a centerpiece of one of New York City’s most iconic public spaces. After the infrastructure was damaged during Hurricane Sandy, KCI provided support for the restoration and adaptive reuse of the historic reflecting pool, transforming the asset into a resilient, modern destination while honoring its historic legacy.
Our team delivered comprehensive services including detailed condition assessments, geotechnical investigations, civil and structural engineering, the design of subsurface utilities, storm sewer systems, and a new framed concrete slab to support the updated fountain structure. To ensure even settlement of the added structural weight, KCI implemented innovative solutions including reinforced CMU block walls with integrated drainage systems. The updated design also incorporates approximately 1.8 miles of water piping to support enhanced water features.
The project’s successful blend of historic preservation, engineering innovation, and long-term resilience has earned industry recognition. Today, the restored Fountain of the Fairs reintroduces dynamic water features and inviting recreational spaces, reinforcing the park’s role as a vibrant cultural and community destination.
