Through innovative solutions, our team engineered the state’s longest single-span steel girder bridge and first-ever dual-lane loop ramps.
For this project, the South Carolina Department of Transportation elected to use an Alternative Technical Concept (ATC) from another team, a first in the organization’s history. KCI incorporated the ATC into the final design, adding a second bridge over the northbound loop to eliminate impacts and avoid right-of-way conflicts with a detention pond. The project also included roadway, structural, pavement, traffic, hydraulic and geotechnical elements in addition to utility coordination, street lighting, signing and pavement markings, and construction quality control inspection.
The enhancements to the interchange serve to improve traffic flow, foster greater accessibility, reduce travel time, and heighten corridor safety. With additional future developments for the region already planned, the project sets the standard for transformative infrastructure initiatives.
