Each day, nearly 5,000 vehicles travel through the intersection at MD 16 and Woods Road in Cambridge, Maryland.

In an effort to make the intersection safer for residents, business travelers and visitors, the Maryland State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) tasked KCI with designing geometric improvements, including the creation of a new roundabout. MDOT SHA also wanted to install a shared-use pedestrian and bicycle path, relocate utilities, improve drainage, and upgrade lighting with LED systems.

This project was a high priority for the county due to a large number of accidents that occurred between 2011 and 2016, two of which resulted in fatalities. Our team was responsible for roadway design, signing, lighting, pavement marking, traffic control plans, subconsultant oversight and environmental services. Completed four months ahead of schedule the roundabout is helping to keep traffic flowing and enhance safety in the area.
