KCI designed 14 new ferry landings and renovated four additional landings as part of the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s initiative to expand its NYC Ferry service to all five boroughs of New York City.
This massive undertaking increased the capacity and resiliency of NYC’s transportation network. New ferry stops were constructed and opened in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. With a total of 24 landings across seven routes, NYC Ferry creates an affordable, efficient way to link city residents and commuters by water. KCI’s scope of work included project management, design, planning, coordination, permitting, procurement, and construction administration.
An innovative design solution was proposed by KCI to create a standardized system consisting of a prefabricated floating barge, canopy, steel piles, fenders, gangway, and passenger amenities. The adaptable and resilient design implemented a floating landing concept, containing a barge that rises and falls with the tides, to accommodate vessels of varying freeboards. The upland footprint of each site was limited to the gate and opening in the handrail. Saving time and cost, this innovative approach also reduced coordination with separate property owners as the gangway does not connect to land but sits on an independent pier. The barges were designed for resiliency and are easy to maintain, removable, and compliant with Local Law 68.
