KCI provided construction engineering and inspection for the Tampa-Hillsborough County Expressway Authority’s Selmon Expressway deck replacement. The innovative design-build incentive/disincentive bridge repair/rehabilitation that involved the removal and replacement of six bridge decks while maintaining traffic on the toll way. The project featured a limited access, high speed, toll facility designed and constructed on a fast track basis to minimize loss of toll revenues while maintaining safety of the workers and the traveling public.
This $6.3 million project called for the replacement of composite precast pre-stressed deck panel/cast-in-place concrete bridge decks with full section cast-in-place concrete decks, approach slabs, barrier walls, expansion joints, and miscellaneous work for dual bridges carrying SR 618 over U.S. 41, the CSX Railroad, and Maydell Drive.
KCI provided full-time construction observation and project documentation, materials quality assurance verification, quantity tracking, and schedule review. Inspectors were responsible for documenting all field adjustments and updating of the as-built plan set.
Our team Inspectors provided quick response in concert with the designer and FDOT for all RFIs, and recommended solutions for changes in construction contract cost, schedule, and design criteria prior to field implementation. KCI’s experience on similar projects ensured avoidance or mitigation of delays and conflicts, alleviating what would otherwise have been placed on the owner.
