KCI was tasked to restore wetland hydrology and enhance habitat function at the Twin Bays Wetland Restoration Site, a full-delivery mitigation site.
Located within the Cape Fear River Basin and the Rock Fish Creek Local Watershed, a designated Targeted Local Watershed, the project transformed approximately 10.6 acres of previously drained agricultural land and 0.4 acres of upland area into functional wetland habitat. Historic drainage and agricultural use had disrupted natural hydrology and limited ecological function across the site.
KCI implemented a series of restoration measures including filling field ditches to restore surface water retention and elevate local groundwater levels, regrading compacted soils to improve infiltration, modifying an existing pond to reestablish natural seep conditions, and redeveloping wetland flow patterns to support hydrologic connectivity. Native hardwood species and seed mixes were also planted to establish a forested hardwood wetland community and support long-term habitat development.
This completed restoration reestablished wetland hydrology, improved watershed function, and created a resilient habitat within a previously degraded agricultural system, delivering lasting water quality and ecological benefits across the region.
