The American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina recognized the Mt. Hope Cemetery GIS Mapping project with an engineering excellence honor award at their annual awards banquet, held on November 5. Jane Thurman, Eric Wilson and William Pruett were on hand to accept the award for KCI.
After several failed attempts by Raleigh City Cemeteries Preservation Inc. to provide a complete inventory of grave markers at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, the non-profit historic preservation organization contracted with KCI to complete the task. KCI’s Geospatial Solutions Practice provided mapping and data collection of 1,500 graves markers located within the 11-acre historic section of the cemetery. With the information captured, our team was able to deliver a fully searchable database of all headstone locations and related information including birth and death dates of the interred individuals and photos of each marker. The new bank of knowledge will be readily available to family members, historians, students and the public seeking to learn more about the historic cemetery, while also helping to preserve and share Raleigh’s African-American history.
